Melanocytes make melanin

- make melanin pigment
- only melanocytes in skin transfer melanin pigment to keratinocytes
  • other melanocytes are located in the brain and eye

- other functions:

  • scavenge free radicals
  • act as barrier to UV radiation
  • pigment skin (cosmetic/ camouflage)

- located in basal cell layer and within hair follicles
